Project Description
Trains through the Ages, Exhibition Design
Railway Museum, 2016
At the Railway Museum in Utrecht guests can discover the story of 175 years of Dutch Railways throughout several worlds. One of these worlds was a large museum hall where classic trains were displayed, originally this was called World Four. Leisure Expert Group was assigned to contribute in making the 175-year-old top collection of Dutch Railways more accessible and attractive for guests.
To realize this, we transformed the former World Four into the ‘Trains through the Ages’ exhibition, with the focus on a design in which it seemed like every individual train came to life. As the project went on, the scope of work increased and more activities were added. In the end, we did not only design the refurbishment of the collection, but also developed a new entrance of the Rail Museum effectively separating the entrance from the new exhibit.

Interactive exhibition
The exhibit Trains through the Ages was made more accessible and attractive for guests by adding interactive elements that all connected to the history of trains, such as a selfie pillar where visitors can send a selfie from various stations from the past and a stoker and machinist game for the children. Also, every train is equipped with an interactive and informative item, allowing visitors to acquire information about the trains in a fun way. The visitors’ visit duration has thereby been demonstrably extended.
